TENOR 2024
Call for Contributions
For the TENOR 2024 conference, we propose a focus on the creative process, highlighting the role of the sketch in music and sound-related creative practices; the sketch as a method of developing ideas, and the role of the sketch in documentation and musicological studies.
In addition, we are interested in developing discussions of notational practices in non-academic (experimental/underground) as well as in music- and sound-adjacent disciplines, with an aim to include a wide range of practitioner perspectives.
It is important to us to enable submissions and the participation of a varied group of practitioners. We thus will offer travel and accommodation scholarships for participants without institutional support. This process will be communicated with the notification (15 January 2024)
Topics
Original contributions are encouraged in, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Computer environments for music notation
- History and aesthetics of notation
- Generative processes and computer assisted composition
- Computational musicology, and musicological perspectives on technology for notation
- Notation in interactive performance systems
- Notation for electronic music, gestural controllers and spatialisation
- Notation and robotics and motion capture
- Notation and AI / Machine learning
- Critical aesthetic and sociological examinations of the interactions between new notation
- technologies and performance.
- Comprovisation
- Principles of mnemonic notation, exploring the relationship between memory and representation
- New interfaces for music notation
- Notation in relationship to information visualisation
- Representation technologies in time-based arts (space, gesture, movement)
- Non-visual notation systems (aural/audio-score, tactile, etc.)
- Animated notation
- Notation and neurocognition
Special Topics
- The role of the sketch in creative, music- and sound-related practices, as a:
- spontaneous and transitory act of creation
- process of structuring / formalising
- mnemonic device
- Notation in non-academic experimental / underground contexts
- Notation in music- and sound-adjacent disciplines (e.g. performing arts, interaction design, ...)
All submissions must be made in one of the following categories:
- Paper presentation (20 minutes)
- Poster presentation Posters should showcase current works in progress, software development, etc. Prototype systems, initial concepts, and early research which has not yet fully matured but is of interest to the TENOR community may be submitted. Those interested should submit extended abstracts (2 pages maximum) through the submission form. Said abstracts will be submitted through a light peer-review, and those accepted must then be presented as posters throughout the conference.
- Workshops and demos These are explicitly meant as hands-on sessions encouraging participants interaction and not merely as extended lectures. Workshops are intended to introduce, try out and discuss new tools, approaches or ideas. Slots of 30', 60’ and 90’ are possible. Proposals should be no longer than 2 pages.
- Sonic works of up to15 minutes in duration with clear reference to the conference topics. This may include pieces for solo instruments, chamber music and ensemble, electroacoustic performances and pieces, live coding, online collaborations and sound installations. See Submission Procedure for Sonic Works for specific topics, formats, list of instruments, technical information and submission requirements.
Note: Participants wishing to submit a piece and a paper are invited to submit in both categories. Please indicate at the top of the paper submission that you are also submitting a piece.
Early career researchers and students are particularly welcome to apply. We especially encourage submissions from women and gender non-binary applicants.
Submission Procedure for Papers, Posters, Workshops and Demos
