Dynamics of the Agoufou Pond in the Sahel in Malian Gourma

EasyChair Preprint 3612

11 pagesDate: June 15, 2020

Abstract

After the major droughts of 1974 and 1984, the reduction or even disappearance of surface and underground water resources was observed in the Sudanese zone. But in the sahel in the gourma the opposite is true, despite the rainfall below the average of 300 mm per year. Surficial and underground hydrological resources have increased surprisingly and other water points have been created as a result of climate change. The objective of this work is to study the effects of climate change on the dynamics of the Agoufou watershed pond from 1984 to 2018. The methodology adopted consisted in detecting changes in land use using multi-date satellite images (ETM and ETM+) coupled with field trips in order to identify the causes of the pond's sustainability and the increase in its water level. The analysis of the dynamics of the images showed that between 1984 and 2018 there was an increase in the water level of 89% or 278 ha, a progression of bare soils of 22% or 3650 ha. The increase in bare soils is explained by the increase in aridity and erosion in the high areas of the basin. It seems to be the basis for the sustainability of the water in the pond.
