Insecticidal Activity of Aqueous Plant Extracts in the Control of Termite Pests in Cashew Orchards in Northern Côte D'Ivoire

Abstract

Cashew cultivation has great socio-economic importance in the populations of northern Côte d'Ivoire. However, insect pests including termites are a major constraint to cultivation. Termites participate in many ecosystem services. However, some species pose a threat to cultivated plants. To fight against these pests, producers use synthetic chemical pesticides, the intensive and sometimes abusive use of which can cause harmful effects on living organisms and the environment. It therefore becomes necessary to find reliable, less toxic and environmentally friendly alternative methods for better pest management in agronomic systems. The objective of this study is to test the effectiveness of three plants (Tephrosia vogelii, Hyptis suaveolens, Lippia multiflora) on termite pests in cashew orchards. The experimental device is a randomized Fisher block of 5 treatments (3 extracts, untreated control, Chlorpyrifos-ethyl) with 3 repetitions and chosen from a 12-year-old orchard. The extracts are prepared from 100g of powder from each plant diluted in 1000ml of distilled water. The filtrate of this solution is evaporated at 55°C in an oven for 48 hours, until a fine dry powder soluble in water is obtained, giving the total aqueous extract (ETA). The results revealed the insecticidal effect of these plant extracts. Termite attack rates were lower in plots treated with plant extracts. Tephrosia vogelii was more toxic (25.50% attack rate) on termites than other plants. This study is part of the search for alternative control methods against termites harmful to cashew trees in order to achieve better productivity.
