Food, Design, and Territory: the Valorization of Manna in the Madonita Area

Abstract

The contribution delves into the relationship between food, design, and territory, with a special focus on Manna, a typical product from the Madonie region. It highlights Manna's significance as both an economic and cultural cornerstone for the local community, through the analysis of traditional agronomic practices and artisanal harvesting techniques. The paper emphasizes Manna's intrinsic value, preserved through historical practices, in both its raw form and when transformed into innovative products. Emblematic references include the Fiasconaro Panettone from Castelbuono, which features Manna as a key ingredient, and the "Birra artigianale delle Madonie" brand that utilizes Manna as a fundamental component. The contribution also explores the narrative of territorial history, suggesting a redesign of the Manna museum in Pollina to further valorize its story. Manna is presented as a paradigm to demonstrate how a "unique" raw material can propel the development of a territory.
