With 5G in such high demand, the need for specific services for customers is essential. The federation of 5G services and resources refers to service providers working together to orchestrate services across many domains. Not only will customers have their networking needs met, but it also allows for opportunities for improving services. There are many suggestions on how to improve federation for 5G, which includes implementing technologies like blockchain and Machine Learning (ML). These technologies contain features that could improve the security, speed, and efficiency of the federation process. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the federation of 5G services and resources, the federation process, enabling technologies, such as blockchain and ML, and potential challenges. Additionally, this paper includes a discussion on recent work and future directions for improving federation. Keyphrases: 5G, Blockchain, Network Slicing, Resource Federation, Security, Service Federation, machine learning
