Japanese learners of English read two-sentence texts varying in causal and semantic relatedness and their eye movements were recorded. Linear mixed-effects models of eye movement measures revealed that causal relatedness has a robust impact on both fixation durations and lookback frequency, whereas the effects of semantic relatedness are modulated by causal relatedness and reading skill.
