Side face fixturing of workpiece such as clamping with machine vises are often used because of small fixturing area of workpiece. However, workpiece deformation due to clumping force deteriorate machining accuracy. As a result, there has been increased attention to the management of clamping force. It has been revealed that the clamping force decreases during machining as the rigidity of the workpiece reduces. This phenomenon makes it difficult to determine the appropriate clamping force. In previous research, it has been reported that changes in clamping force during side clamping using a machine vise can be quantitatively estimated. However, the proposed method is only applicable for faced pair fixturing such as machine vise fixturing. Therefore, it is not applicable for multi-point clamping using standard fixtures such as side clamps, toe clamps, locators and so on. This research proposes a method to estimate the reduction of clamping force during machining operation of multi-point fixturing. Keyphrases: Machining, clumping force reduction, side clamp, workholding
