Abstract

Lean manufacturing entails the production of parts at a lower cost by minimizing and eliminating the eight wastes in the barrier areas. The value adding process is done at a low cost but meet the customer requirements and improving the quality. The ever increasing global makert competition in the automotive industry is compelling the  automotive Supply chain industry to adopt the Lean manufacturing (LM) philosophy. The philosophy initially has ten barrier areas based on the Philosopy, Process, People and problem solving (4Ps). The study in South Africa automotive supply chain revealed fourteen barrier areas where obstacles in implementing LM exist. The paper seeks to develop a framework for overcomong the 14 barrier areas in LM specifically in the automotive Supply Chain. This will be usefully in other manufacturing and service industry that are adopting the philosopy.
