Abstract

With the uncertainty of load curve and power transfers between various utilities there is a thrust on finding the solution to minimize the utilization of existing system and to provide adequate voltage support. In these situations Flexible AC Transmission system (FACTS) devices play very important role in increasing system loadability and performance. These FACTS devices if placed optimally can be effective in providing voltage support, controlling power flow and in turn resulting in to lower losses. Here FACTS devices SVC, STATCOM, TCSC have been considered for optimal placement. The Artificial Bee Colony algorithm (ABC) has been developed for simultaneous placement of above said FACTS devices. The effect of these devices on line flows and bus voltage profile has been studied by placing at optimal locations dictated by ABC algorithm. The results have been validated on IEEE 14 and 30-bus systems.

Keyphrases: ABC-Artificial Bee Colony algorithm, FACTS-Flexible AC Transmission System, STATCOM, SVC - Static Var Compensator, TCSC
