Correct foot placement has been identified as one of the most important measures for maintaining and recovering balance during walking. In this study, the Foot Placement Estimator (FPE) was evaluated as a measure of stability when a constant disturbance was applied to the gait of young individuals on a treadmill. Individuals reduced their step width in reaction to the disturbance, resulting in increased foot placement instability, particularly in the contralateral foot. This study confirmed the utility of the stability measure derived from the FPE in studies of gait stability, especially in disturbed gait.
