Heat Transfer Numerical Simulations for Bicycle Disc Brakes

Abstract

Prior brake temperature prediction efforts demonstrated that heat transfer models can predict brake disc temperatures for laboratory and outdoor braking experiments. However the heat transfer models require convective heat transfer coefficients for the disc, coefficients which were previously obtained via simplified steady CFD simulations that modeled only the outer disc brake pad track. This work extends the previous efforts to determine disc heat transfer coefficients by modeling three contemporary commercial slotted 160 mm bicycle disc brake discs, and specifically uses transient CFD simulations which now include the complete disc geometry and radial disc metallic spokes and brake track slots/holes features. The resulting coefficients are used with an example downhill braking power data to demonstrate temperature differences between the designs.
