Compressed Regolith Brick (CRB): a Proposal to Study the Feasibility of Producing in Situ CRB Units for Construction on the Moon

Abstract

Successful construction on the Moon will require the development of new technologies, materials and specialised equipment that can operate in low-gravity conditions and extreme temperatures. The European Space Agency has proposed the production of a lunar regolith brick using traditional Earth-based ceramic brick manufacturing technology. In the United States, the sintering of regolith has been proposed to produce a material for the construction of extraterrestrial masonry structures. Both China and the US are investigating 3D printing technology using lunar dust for lunar construction. This paper proposes to investigate the possibility of producing in-situ 'Compressed Regolith Bricks' (CRB).
